Report Finds Chiropractic to Be Preferred Method of Treatment
A study conducted by the Center on an Aging Society at Georgetown University indicates that back pain is the most frequent cause of work limitations, as well as lost work days. According to the report, more than 80 million work days are lost every year because of back discomfort. Approximately two of every three workers who experience back pain every year will miss at least one day of work because of the condition. And the effects of back are not limited to restrictions on work or lost work days. The study also found that those who suffered back pain spent an estimated 200 million days each year bedridden.
The study also linked persistent back pain with emotional and mental health issues. Adults with back pain were about twice as likely to experience feelings of hopelessness, sadness and worthlessness than those who did not have back problems. The report found that more than half of those with back discomfort were increasingly nervous and nearly as many had the feeling that simply getting through each day was an effort.
The study found that adults with back trauma are significantly more likely to seek medical care than those without such pain—83% of those who reported back pain visited a doctor at least once a year, compared to 63% of those adults who did not have back pain. The average medical costs per visit were higher as well for persons suffering back pain—those will back pain paid an average of nearly $1,500 per visit, whereas those without back pain averaged less than $600 for treatment.
The Georgetown research also found that those who sought treatment from chiropractors for their back pain reported a higher level of satisfaction and recovery than those who sought traditional medical care.
