Tips for Finding the Right PT Practitioner
When you’ve suffered an injury or developed a condition that needs physical therapy, one of the first things you’ll discover—you’ll have lots of choices when it comes to physical therapists. Here are some basic questions to help you get the services you need and that will get you back on the road to health.
Question #1 — Are You Board-Certified?
This is really another way of asking whether the therapist has any special training. Many PTs have documented extensive hours treating certain conditions, and have passed rigorous exams, allowing them to be designated as “board-certified clinical specialists.” In essence, this is a two-part question: 1) Are you board-certified, and 2) if so, what is your specialty. Make certain the physical therapist has experience and training handling your type of injury.
Question #2 — What Types of Treatment Do You Offer?
Most physical therapists will use weights, machines, resistance bands and other devices to help you build strength, flexibility and range of motion. Some offer massage therapy, ice and heat, electrical stimulation and other cutting edge techniques.
Question #3 — Will I Always Work with the Same Therapist?
Physical therapy can be a very personal experience. Furthermore, most PTs have their own preferred methods of treatment. You don’t want to have to start over again every time. Make certain that there will be consistency in your treatment.
Question #4 — Do You Take My Insurance?
For many, this may be the most important question, as physical therapy costs can mount pretty quickly. Even if the physical therapist takes your insurance, you may need a referral from a general practitioner. Contact your health insurance provider to make certain you follow procedure.
